E. W. G. Simpson received a temporary commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 11th Battalion East Surrey Regiment on 17 June 1915. Transferred to the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) in February 1916, he was advanced to Temporary Lieutenant on 1 January 1917 and Acting Captain on 1 March 1918.
