Lawrence William Franklin Dale, a holder of the Belgian Croix de Guerre for his services in the Great War, was killed in the collision of H.M. cruisers Emerald and Dauntless in the Malacca Straits on 15 June 1941, Emerald sustaining serious damage and the loss of 14 men. Aged 45 years, he left a widow, May, of Menston, Yorkshire. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
