Joseph King was born on 19 May 1893 in Cashel, Co. Galway. A Labourer by occupation, on 30 June 1914 he was appointed a Probationary Constable in the City of Glasgow Police. He was promoted to 2nd Class Constable in December 1914 and 1st Class Constable in December 1915. King served in the Army, February 1916-January 1919. On 13 January 1919 he was re-appointed a Constable in “C” Division of the City of Glasgow Police. On three occasions, 10 November 1922, 17 January 1923 and 28 February 1925, King was awarded the sum of five shillings and the Chief Constable’s Certificate for apprehending housebreakers.

On 21 March 1944 Constable Joseph King of the Eastern Division, City of Glasgow Police, was awarded the Glasgow Bravery Medal in silver, ‘for stopping a runaway horse in London Road on 8th July last’.

Constable King retired from the City of Glasgow Police on 14 December 1947, having served 33 years, 167 days service with that force.
