George Miller was born near Lochmaddy on the isle of North Uist, Scotland. He attested for the Cameron Highlanders at Inverness on 26 May 1896, aged 18 years, 6 months. He served as a Private in “A” Company, 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders during the Sudan Campaign, 1896-98 and later went on to serve in the Second Boer War. Private Miller was discharged from full-time service in 1903 and was discharged from the Reserve in May 1908. In 1903 he joined the Govan Police Force which later became part of the Glasgow City Police Force. With the outbreak of war he was unable to rejoin the colours, being medically unfit. In 1916, being recently appointed a Court Officer in the Govan Police Court, he died suddenly on 13 July. Leaving a widow, Constable Miller was accorded a full military funeral.

With a copy of The Police Review and Parade Gossip, 11 August 1916 which contains his obituary. Referring to his military service, it states: ‘Being an excellent piper he was attached to the pipe band of this famous regiment, and before being discharged he acted as pipe-major’. Referring to his police service, it further states: ‘He was a member of the famous Govan Police Pipe Band and a noted dancer’. Also with recipient’s Parchment Certificate of Discharge, with original envelope - this addressed to ‘George Millar, c/o Maynard, 50 Cornwall St., Paisley Road West, Glasgow’; an original photograph of the recipient in uniform with medals and pipes; and a Medal Roll Booklet for Officers and Men of the 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders present at the battles of The Atbara and Khartoum.
