Five: Second Lieutenant Henry Carter, Labour Corps, late Lancashire Fusiliers, killed in action, 28 February 1918

Henry Carter was born in Wigan, Lancashire. A Collier by occupation he attested for the Lancashire Fusiliers at Bury on 2 April 1889, aged 18 years, 2 months. With the 2nd Battalion he served in India, March 1891-March 1897. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1897 but rejoined the Colours in February 1898. With the 2nd Battalion he was posted to South Africa, June 1900-October 1902, being promoted to Sergeant in August 1900. Awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. with a gratuity of £5 by A.O. 254 of 1910. Sergeant Carter was discharged on 1 April 1910 on the termination of his second period of engagement.

Henry Carter, then employed as a Chauffeur Mechanic, joined the Army Reserve (Special Reserve) at Bury on 7 November 1914. Posted to the 9th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, as a Colour Sergeant he entered the Balkan theatre of war on 11 July 1915. He later served in France. In November 1917 he was discharged to a commission in the Labour Corps. Returning to France/Flanders, 2nd Lieutenant Carter, 111th Company Labour Corps, was killed in action on 28 February 1918, aged 47 years. He was buried in the Duhallow Advanced Dressing Station Cemetery, near Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was the son of Henry and Cicely Carter of Hindley, Wigan, and husband of Alice Carter of 282 Hornby Street, Bury, Lancashire.

With a quantity of copied service papers, with copied marriage certificate, roll and newspaper extracts and m.i.c. The latter shows the recipient’s entitlement to the 1914-15 Star.
