James Kennedy was born in Earlston, Berwickshire, lived in Ancrum, Roxburghshire and enlisted at Derby. Serving with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment), he was killed in action, France/Flanders, on 30 January 1915, aged 30 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial. He was the son of Thomas and Catherine Kennedy of Ancrum. His brother, Norman Kennedy also fell in action.
