Stanley Major first entered the French theatre of war as a Sergeant in the 18th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, in mid-November 1915. Subsequently commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, East Kent Regiment, in August 1916, he was killed in action on 3 March 1917, while attached to the 1st Battalion. He left a widow, resident in Cape Province, South Africa, and is buried in Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay, France.
