Aircraftsman Eric Wright Maltby, No. 88 Squadron, R.A.F., was killed in action on 11 May 1940, aged 19 years. His Fairey Battle light bomber (P.2202) was shot down by heavy ground fire during an attack on an enemy column at Bouillon and crashed near Saines at 10.30 on 11 May 1940. Reports state that Pilot Officer A. W. Mungovan and Sergeant F. Robson were captured, whilst Aircraftsman Maltby was killed. Other reports list that two of the three crew members were killed. Maltby was initially buried in a field grave nearby; later his remains were moved to Hotton War Cemetery, Luxembourg. Eric Wright Maltby was the son of Albert William and Martha Hannah Maltby of Redcar, Yorkshire.

Medals to A. W. Maltby with copied m.i.c. Medals to E. W. Maltby with some copied research and with card forwarding box - the address erased but the name ‘Redcar’ may still be discerned; also with condolence slip, named to ‘Aircraftsman First Class E. W. Maltby’.
