Geoffrey James Haig Stein was born in Beckenham, Kent, on 6 March 1891, the son of Charles Guthrie Stein, a Surgeon, and Constance Louisa Haig Stein nee Sykes. An Automobile Engineer by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Flying Corps at South Farnborough on 16 November 1914 and entered the France/Flanders theatre of war as a Corporal on 24 July 1915. He served with No. 10 Squadron, November 1914-January 1916; No. 11 Squadron, January-October 1916, and No. 39 Squadron, October 1916-November 1917. Remaining in France until 20 September 1916, as a Flight Sergeant he was discharged to a commission in the R.F.C. on 20 November 1917, being appointed a 2nd Lieutenant (Equipment Officer 3rd Class). On 1 April 1918 he duly became an officer in the Royal Air Force. In May 1919 he was promoted to Lieutenant. Latterly employed as Technical Assistant to the Officer-in-Charge of Engine Groups and based at the Engine Repair Shops, Pont de l’Arches, France, he was placed on the Unemployed List on 9 November 1919. For his war services he was awarded the 1914-15 Star (not with lot) and British War and Victory Medals. Returning to civil life, he was employed as a Mechanical Engineer and on 12 February 1927 he married Lilian Leonora Sammons, a Musician.

Stein Esq., 101 King Henry’s Road, Hampstead, N.W.3’; Discharge Certificate; Character Certificate; letter re. appointment as Equipment Officer; Officer’s Record of Services Book; extract from the Officers Blue Book; letter re. placement on the Unemployed List; Standing Orders booklet, by Col. G. B. Hynes, D.S.O., Commanding Engine Repair Shops, R.A.F.; sundry programs and letters; a photograph album with photographs; a number of other loose photographs - some military; and newspaper cuttings. Together with a card box of issue for the W.W. 1 medals; an unofficial Coronation Medal 1902, base metal; an Air League of the British Empire badge; and copied m.i.c. and R.A.F. service papers.
