John Ryan was born and lived in Aberavon, Glamorganshire and enlisted at Port Talbot. He served initially with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Serving with the 1st Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 8 October 1918, aged 19 years. He was buried in the Proville British Cemetery, near Cambrai, Nord, France. He was the son of Patrick and Catherine Ryan of 20 John Street, Aberavon, Port Talbot.
