James George Hay, also known as Hay-Boyd, was distinguished at the battle of Inkermann when, with two others under Captain Radcliffe, he collected 100 men of various regiments and led them back to the Sandbag Battery to face a dense mass of Russians. Running out of ammunition, he led them under a gauntlet of fire back to the 2nd Battalion, half a mile away. Rearmed, the party returned to the fray, Hay himself carrying the Colours at one stage. In recognition of his services in the campaign he was awarded the brevet of Major and the 5th class of the Medjidie. He was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel and retired by sale of his commission on 20 April 1866.
