Edmund Nelson fisher was born at Kennington Vicarage on 27 May 1877, only son of the Venerable Edmund Henry Fisher, Archdeacon of Southwark. After receiving an education at Marlborough and at Trinity College, Cambridge, he joined the Manchester Regiment in August 1899, and was in the field with the 1st battalion throughout the war in South Africa. He was severely wounded by a gunshot in the face on the 6th January, 1900, in the memorable attack by the Boers on Caesar’s Camp which was held by the Manchesters. After the relief of Ladysmith he served with his regiment in the operations in Northern Natal and the Transvaal, and at the conclusion of peace went to Lydenburg in the Northern Transvaal. He died at Westmeon Rectory, Hampshire, on 1st June, 1909.
