The Honourable Frederick Walpole was born on 18 September 1822, third son of the Earl of Orford and a descendant of Rir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford, Prime Minister to George I and George II. He served aboard Melville as a Volunteer 1st Class during the operations in China 1840-42, and passed his examination on 26 April 1843. He served for some time as Mate in the Excellent gunnery ship at Portsmouth and received his commission as Lieutenant on 30 December 1845, serving until 1848 in the Collingwood, flag-ship of Sir George Seymour in the Pacific. He did not afterwards serve afloat and retired from the Royal Navy on 1 October 1864 with the rank of Commander.
