Corporal Arthur Cousins, 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles came to the rescue of Corporal Carr of the same regiment who was leading his Company across the Tugela River, Natal, when he was carried into deep water by the current. Corporal Cousins swam after him some 50 yards and got him onto a rock where a boat picked them both up.
