The Historical Record of the Forty-Fourth, by Thomas Carter, notes that Hoskins was wounded at Sebastopol on 18 June 1855, and that he ‘was promoted to a company in the regiment in August of this year, but retired from the service in 1858. He joined the English Volunteer Legion of Garibaldi’s army in 1860, with which he served as major of brigade. He subsequently took service as captain in the army of the Confederate States of America, and was killed in action in 1863.’
