Frederick Marchant was born in Hammersmith, London, and enlisted into the Essex Regiment on 8 October 1870. He served in the Nile Expedition in 1884-85 and was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal in April 1889. He was discharged in February 1899 to the Permanent Staff of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, Essex Regiment, and re-joined from the Army Reserve in September 1914 when aged 65 years. He served throughout the war in the UK until he was discharged as physically unfit even for light duties in November 1916. He died on 8 June 1944 at the age of 95 years. Sold with copy service and discharge papers.
