Lieutenant Hugh S. Marsham Townshend was appointed Second Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment in May 1901 and was employed on prisoner of war guard duties on St Helena. In July 1916 he was appointed a Lieutenant in the Scots Guards, initially joining the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion; sometime after being drafted to a regular Battalion for service in France and Flanders.
