D.C.M. London Gazette 21 October 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On one occasion, when his platoon had suffered heavy casualties from the enemy’s shell fire, he displayed much skilful initiative in the way he reorganised it under heavy fire; he also, on another occasion, rescued a dangerously wounded man, and by his prompt action saved his life. He set a very fine example of courage and of coolness under fire to all about him, and during the whole period under review this non-commissioned officer has shown marked ability.’

Bar to D.C.M.
London Gazette 15 November 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and initiative in an attack. When all the officers of his company had been wounded, he took command of the company and led it to the objective. When the attack on his left had been held up he formed a defensive flank with great skill. He showed splendid judgment and leadership.’
