D.S.M. London Gazette 1 December 1942: ‘For gallantry, skill and resolution in H.M. Ships escorting an important convoy to North Russia in the face of relentless attacks by enemy aircraft and submarines.’

The following details are taken from the original Admiralty records: ‘Leading Seaman Thomas Morris Ferns, R.N.R. By his personal example as Captain of the Gun he has maintained the highest standard of keenness and alertness in his Gun’s Crews when closed up for very long periods.

The escorting force of destroyers was brilliantly led by Rear-Admiral Lindsay Burnett O.B.E., flying his flag in H.M.S. Scylla. The PQ comvoy was subjected to very heavy attacks from torpedo carrying aircraft, and to a lesser extent to high level bombing and submarine attacks. The QP convoy was faced mainly with submarine attacks. Despite serious losses, the greater part of the essential supplies were conveyed to North Russia, 27 ships out of 39 being brought to port. 14 ships out of 17 returned safely in QP14. Great gallantry and tactical skill was shown throughout by the Commanding Officers of the destroyers concerned, and of the Fleet Oilers, Gray Ranger and Black Ranger. The enemy suffered heavy air losses, and toll was also taken of his submarine forces.’
