D.S.M. London Gazette 19 June 1945: ‘For bravery, determination and devotion to duty whilst serving in H.M.S. Retalick and light coastal forces in operations against E-boats, enemy submarines and explosive motor boats. Able Seaman Cyril Bert Pearson (Birmingham).’
In the evening of the 17th January 1945, a German reconnaissance aircraft sighted convoy OS 65/KMS 39. Of the Borkum group U-boats directed to it, only U-641 (Horst Rendtel) was able to close and on the 19th she was located WSW of Ireland, 10 miles ahead of the convoy, and sunk in a Hedgehog attack by the corvette H.M.S. Violet. There were no survivors. Sold with a copy of the official action report.
