A scarce Great War M.M. group of four awarded to Sub-Section Leader G. M. Cuthbert, British Red Cross Society and Voluntary Aid Detachment

M.M. London Gazette 30 July 1918: ‘For gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy air raid. She showed exceptional coolness and courage in directing her section.’ Only 135 awards of the M.M. were made to women during the Great War.

Nurse Galanthe Mildred Cuthbert enrolled in the British Red Cross Society as a Chauffeuse on 27 December 1916, certificate No. 17616. She was posted to France on 6 March 1917, where she worked evacuating casualties with the Le Treport Convoy. In August 1918, she was posted to the 62nd General Hospital in Italy and promoted to Head Driver with the 26th Motor Ambulance Convoy, and subsequently served in Constantinople from May 1919 to December 1920. She was awarded the B.R.C.S. Special Service Cross for Gallant Conduct in May 1919.
