This would appear to be a souvenir for a member of the 3rd Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers. The third Illinois Infantry Regiment had its headquarters in Joliet, Illinois. It was mobilised for the war with Spain on 8 May 1898 and the regimental strength consisted of 50 officers and 1220 enlisted men. The commanding officer during war operations was Col. Fred Bennitt. During the conflict the regiment was first stationed at Chiekamauga, Georgia and then sent for service in Puerto Rico where it participated in skirmishes. During the period of the campaign the regiment suffered one private soldier killed in action. The regiment was demobilised in January 1899
