John Green was born in Barnham Broom, Wymondham, Norfolk. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the East Norfolk Militia, he attested for the 31st Brigade at Great Yarmouth on 25 March 1880. In September 1885 he was tried and imprisoned for fraudulent enlistment into the 10th Hussars and all his former service was forfeited having been convicted for desertion (this later restored for pension purposes). Posted to the Norfolk Regiment in 1885, he served overseas in Gibraltar, December 1895-July 1886 and again during January 1888-February 1889; East Indies, February 1889-March 1891; Burma, March 1891-March 1892; South Africa, January-June 1900. Being transferred to the Army Reserve on 26 March 1892, he re-engaged for a further 4 years in March 1897, being recalled for service in December 1899. Green was finally discharged as time expired on 1 July 1902.
