Alfred Robert James Hearne was born in Meerut, India. A Civil Engineer by occupation, he attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at London on 20 February 1900. Promoted to Corporal in January 1901, to Sergeant in July 1901 and to Lieutenant in July 1901. Served with the 25th (Sharpshooters) Company 18th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa. He resigned from the Imperial Yeomanry in August 1902. Awarded the K.S.A. as Lieutenant. With some copied notes.
