Victoria Cross (copy); Crimea 1854-56, 4 clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Inkerman, Sebastopol (John Berryman, 17th Lancers), later engraved naming, contained in a wooden glazed frame, 356 x 306mm., which is decorated inside with three silver filagree battle honours and a small early Victorian brass pill box, Crimea Medal with edge bruising and contact marks, nearly very fine, V.C. extremely fine, an attractive display £500-600

‘On 25 October 1854 at Balaclava, Crimea (Charge of the Light Brigade) Troop Sergent-Major Berryman, whose horse had been shot under him, stopped on the field with a wounded officer amidst a storm of shot and shell. Two Sergeants came to his assistance and between them they carried the wounded officer out of range of the guns’ (Ref. The Register of the Victoria Cross). The ‘two sergeants’ - J. Farrell and J. Malone were also awarded the Victoria Cross for this action.
The original group was sold by John Hayward in 1972.
