George Austin Neame was born in Sutton, Surrey. As a Gentleman and Timber Merchant he attested for service in the Imperial Yeomanry on 31 January 1900, aged 25 years, 9 months. With the 47th Company 13th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry he served in South Africa, 1 March-15 October 1900. He was taken prisoner at Lindley, 31 March 1900 but later released. Attained the rank of Lance-Serjeant on 7 August 1900. Discharged at his own request on 9 October 1900 at Mackenzies Farm, South Africa.
Served as a Lieutenant on the General List (Intelligence) during the Great War. Was awarded the M.B.E. (London Gazette 27 April 1918) being employed in North Russia. Awarded the British War and Victory Medals. He was issued with a replacement Q.S.A. in 1934.
