John McCormack was born in Clonuish, Longford. A Grocer by occupation, he attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Belfast on 11 January 1900, aged 21 years. Posted to the 54th (Belfast) Company 13th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, he served in South Africa, 3 March 1900-7 June 1901. He was taken prisoner at Lindley, 31 May 1900. Discharged at Belfast on 15 June 1901, his papers record that he was a ‘Good rider and horsemaster.’ With copied service notes.
