Daniel Fisher was born in London. A Clerk by occupation he enlisted into the Rifle Brigade on 8 October 1848. Serving in the Crimea War in the 2nd Battalion, he was present at the battles of Alma and Inkermann and at the siege operations before Sebastopol. He was awarded the French Medaille Militaire for his bravery in action during the final attack on the Redan, 8 September 1855. His citation reads:
‘Colour-Sergeant Daniel Fisher, formed up a party, and silenced two carronades in the caponnière of the Redan, on the 18th of September; went in search of wounded comrades same afternoon, under heavy fire.’
Fisher then served in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny, being present in the operations leading to the capture of Lucknow. Returning from India Fisher was discharged at the Regimental Depot at Winchester on 19 June 1860 having completed his 12 year limited service engagement.
