William Jones was born in St. Saviours, Nottingham. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 4th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, he attested for the Leicestershire Regiment at Nottingham on 14 February 1893, aged 20 years, 4 months. With them he served in Jamaica, January 1894-December 1895 and South Africa, December 1895-September 1902. Transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1903; discharged on 13 February 1905. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
