Auction Catalogue
Andaman Islands, Victoria, Rupee, 1861, coronetted bust type, with usual central hole (Prid 1; KM Tn 1). Pierced and plugged, otherwise fine, extremely rare (£200-300)
An interesting issue, recalled from circulation in 1870. The very fine example owned by Major Pridmore realised £1250 at auction in 1982. Why anyone should want to pierce a coin made with a hole is difficult to comprehend.
Jerome Remick notes in British Commonwealth Coins “The coins are so rare that a collector should be happy to obtain a specimen in any condition”
