Jamaica, The Jamaica Militia, 1803, an oval brass plate from a belt-buckle, a crocodile atop a torse (twisted wreath), facing to left, jamaica above and 1803 below, 76 x 57mm (Prid. 137). Of slightly convex form, pierced at top and twice at bottom, left and right, much verdigris to back and lacking any attachment fixings, otherwise fine £100-150

The emblem has been referred to as ‘an alligator on a log’, however there are no alligators in Jamaica and the reptile is an American crocodile. The design is also found on cartridge boxes. Pridmore listed the piece from the Parsons sale, Glendining, May 1954 (lot 1049), without seeing it
