Octavius William Hill served as a Midsipman in the Indian Navy in the Burmese War in 1853 (Medal with clasp for Pegu). He was appointed Ensign in the 58th Foot in June 1855, and purchased a Lieutenancy in the same regiment in January 1858. He rose to the rank of Captain and subsequently became a Paymaster in the Army Pay Department.
