Walter Reginald Paul was born on 28 April 1882, and educated at Clifton College and the Royal Military College at Woolwich, and entered the Army in 1900 as 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Artillery. He served throughout the Great War on the Experimental Staff at Shoeburyness, becoming Deputy Superintendent of Experiments in April 1916; Assistant Director of Artillery, War Office, 1922; Member, Ordnance Committee, 1924; Director of Artillery, India, 1928; Deputy Master-General of Ordnance in India, 1931-35. He retired with the rank of Major-General in 1935 and died on 8 January 1953.
