Major Archibald Francis Hamilton served in the operations in British, German and Portuguese East Africa, Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia between 2 November 1914 and 17 April 1918. He held appointments as Staff Officer to I.G.C. attached H.Q. Indian Division, Special Service Officer, April to July 1916; as Staff Captain, 1st East African Infantry Brigade, July 1916 to February 1917; and as Brigade Major to the 1st East African Infantry Brigade, February to August 1917 (Despatches twice, M.C.). He served subsequently in Afghanistan N.W.F. 1919, and in Waziristan 1921-24.
