Provenance: H.D. Gibbs Collection, Hans Schulman Auction (New York), 18-19 March 1966, lot 1821.

This and the following lot are attributed to the town of St Pierre, Martinique; if that is the correct location (and these pieces do occur in commerce in England) it is likely this is a private issue of some kind, perhaps used for lighterage from ship to shore
