Louis Joseph Bailey was born in Devizes on 29 September 1881. A Gardener by occupation, he enlisted at Devizes on 29 September 1899. He served in the Boer War and then the Great War, entering the France/Flanders theatre of war on 7 October 1914 and suffering a gunshot wound to the left foot in the latter. He was discharged on 14 December 1918 being surplus to military requirements and was awarded the Silver War Badge.
