Joseph Stanley Shears was born in Croydon, Surrey, lived in Addiscombe, Surrey and enlisted at Croydon. Serving with the 7th Battalion (The Queens) The Royal West Surrey Regiment, he was killed in action on 1 July 1916 - the first day of the battle of the Somme. He was buried in the Dantzig British Cemetery, Mametz, Somme. He was the son of James and Mary E. Shears of 53 Albert Rd., Croydon.
