Arthur Richard Caldicott was born in Wandsworth, London on 5 May 1879. A Carpenter by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as Carpenter’s Crew on Pembroke II on 27 July 1898. He was promoted to Shipwright when on Perseus in December 1901 and Leading Shipwright when at Pembroke II in May 1904. Appointed Carpenter’s Mate in July 1910 when on Lancaster and Shipwright 1st Class in December 1912 when at Pembroke II. In July 1914 he was appointed Chief Petty Officer Mechanic 3rd Class with the R.N.A.S. when at Pembroke III, attaining the rating of Chief Petty Officer 1st Class in March 1916. Appointed a Warrant Officer in June 1917. With copied service paper, bearing ‘Land Operations’ stamp.
