William Mitchelson became a M.R.C.S. in 1817. Appointed an Officiating Assistant Surgeon on 8 April 1819; was struck off on 30 September 1820 and was relieved of his duties and discharged on 16 October 1820. Re-appointed as an Assistant Surgeon in January 1821, he served in the Ava and Bhurtpoor campaigns. Advanced to Surgeon in December 1832. Served as such with the 11th Light Cavalry at the battle of Punniar, 29 December 1843. Was elected a F.R.C.S. in the original list of 1844. Mitchelson retired on 1 January 1846 and died on 25 May 1866.
Approximately 13 Army of India Medals were awarded with ‘Ava/Bhurtpoor’ clasp combination.
