William John Hicks was born in Padstow, Cornwall on 28 February 1882. A Printer by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as a Painter 2nd Class on H.M.S. Vivid II on 4 January 1902. He was promoted to Painter 1st Class in May 1908. During the Great War he served on the armoured cruiser H.M.S. Roxburgh, June 1912-November 1917 and was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in June 1917. After the war he served on the battlecruiser H.M.S. New Zealand on her world tour of the Dominions with Admiral Jellicoe, February 1919-April 1920, and was promoted to Chief Painter in August 1919. William Halifax was born in Portsmouth on 11 January 1892. Employed as a Seaman in the Merchant Navy he entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 20 December 1909, being advanced to Boy 1st Class in April 1910. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in June 1910 and to Able Seaman in April 1912. Throughout the Great War he served aboard the battleship H.M.S. Dreadnought. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in December 1926. With copied service paper.
