Albert Edwin Elvin was born in Windsor, Berkshire. He enlisted as Boy with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment at London, 14 June 1884, aged 14 years, and in August the same year he was appointed a Drummer. He attained the rank of Sergeant Drummer in May 1896. With the regiment he served in Malta, November 1895-January 1897 and Egypt and Sudan, January 1897-December 1898; as such he was present at the battles of The Atbara, 8 April 1898 and Omdurman, 2 September 1898. As a bandsman, Elvin’s role during the battles would probably be as a stretcher bearer. He returned to England in December 1898 and in April 1899 he transferred to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, being awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1908. Sergeant Elvin retired from the Army on 13 June 1911. With copied service papers and roll extract.
