John Buchanan was born in Coon Rapids, Iowa, U.S.A. on 10 January 1899. He attested with the 190th Battalion C.E.F. in Winnipeg, Manitoba on 9 August 1916. He served in France with the 8th Battalion from 4 July 1917. For his services he was awarded the Military Medal. He was discharged in Canada on 30 May 1919. Buchanan re-enlisted for service in W.W.2 on 12 September 1939, attesting for the Royal Canadian Artillery. He was deployed in the U.K. but did not see any active service - entitled to the Defence Medal; Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with clasp and War Medal. Buchanan was discharged on 30 June 1945.
With commemorative plaque for his service in 1939-46, 218 x 162mm., metal on wooden base, named to ‘Sgt. J. J. Buchanan, M.M. C-18574’ ‘In Grateful Recognition of Your Patriotic Spirit and Noble Sacrifices as a Member of the Canadian Active Forces of World War II, the Citizens of the City of Oshawa Hereby Record their Sincere Appreciation of Your Devoted Services in the Preservation of Honour Among Nations and the Freedom of the World.’
Additionally with recipient’s original Discharge Certificate 1945 and copied service papers and gazette extracts.
