Four: Flight Lieutenant E. K. Heywood, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, a Spitfire pilot who was shot down and killed over Normandy 23 June 1944

Flight Lieutenant Edward Kinder Heywood, flying a Spitfire V of No. 26 Squadron, was shot down by a fighter whilst spotting near Cricquerville on the afternoon of 23 June 1944. He was the son of Samuel Kinder Heywood and Beatrice Alice Heywood; and husband of Margaret Heywood, of Sale, Cheshire.

The Squadron Record Book notes: ‘One third of all sorties flown today were abortive because of the weather. Bad visibility and low cloud persisted throughout the whole day and it was not possible to find many targets. Seven shoots were undertaken and hits were obtained on gun positions and a cross roads. F/O. Griffiths and F/Lt. Heywood have not returned from a sortie in the Caen area and have been reported as missing.’

Heywood is buried in Cricquerville-en-Auge cemetery; sold with relevant copied pages from the S.R.B.
