Private R. Ireland, 1/5th Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers entered the Balkan theatre of war on 6 June 1915. With the same battalion he subsequently served in France where his bravery in action was rewarded with the M.M. He was demobilised on 22 February 1919. The recipient came from Castle Douglas.
