D.S.O. London Gazette 16 August 1917: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He showed great powers of leadership and resource in leading his battalion during an attack, and afterwards consolidated his position with great skill.’ Awarded for the attack on Messines Ridge, 7 June 1917.
M.C. London Gazette 3 June 1916: ‘For distinguished service in the field. Temp. Capt. John Alderney Howell, Cheshire R. Serv. Bn.’
