Bryan Crawley was born at Thornby, Northants, and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 3rd Class aboard H.M.S. Penelope on 24 March 1807, aged 11 years. He served a full 40 years in the Navy, his ratings including those of Gunner’s Mate, Commander’s Cook, Ship’s Corporal, Gunner’s Crew, and Boatswain’s Mate. His last ship was the San Josef which he left on 30 September 1843, before being admitted to Greenwich Hospital on 29 October 1847. Sold with copies of his statement of service and Penelope’s Muster & Pay Book for the period covering the capture of Martinique, February 1809.
