Charles Lethbridge Swaine, who was born at Tirhoot in Bengal in July 1852, studied medicine at Aberdeen University and was appointed a Surgeon on the Madras Establishment in March 1876. Subsequently appointed a Medical Officer to the Hyderabad Contingent, he witnessed active service with the 2nd Infantry Regiment in the Burma campaigns of 1885-89 (Medal & 2 clasps), and was advanced to Surgeon-Major in March 1888. Swaine’s final posting was to the 6th Infantry Regiment as a Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel, following which he was appointed Sanitary Commissioner and Superintendent of Vaccinations in Berar in June 1898, and a Civil Surgeon in the Central Provinces in November 1903. He appears to have retired in July 1907.
