Ernest Charles Patrick Boyle was born on 21 November 1860, the son of Charles John Boyle and Zacyntha Moore. During the Boer War he served as a Sergeant-Major in the 73rd Company (Paget’s Horse) 19th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, 1900-01, and was awarded the Queen’s medal with four clasps. As a Captain in the Honourable Artillery Company, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 20 January 1915. As a Lieutenant-Colonel in the H.A.C. he was awarded the D.S.O. (London Gazette 1 January 1917). He was killed in action on 7 February 1917, aged 56 years. Lieutenant-Colonel Boyle was buried in the Hamel Military Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel.
