‘At 7.30 a.m. on the 11th May, 1917, a man was accidentally knocked overboard from his ship at sea. John Pengelly, deck hand on one of H.M. ships, jumped in and caught him but could not retain his hold and the man was drowned.’ (R.H.S. Case no. 43,299).
