William James Chambers was born in Luton, Bedfordshire on 12 September 1876. An Oilman’s asistant by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Marines at London on 27 July 1896. His first seaboard posting was aboard the Galatea, February 1898-February 1899; he served aboard the Forte, April 1899-May 1902. In November 1899 he landed in Natal for the defence of Durban and was subsequently awarded the Queen’s medal with the clasp for Natal. He was discharged from the Royal Marines on 7 October 1902. At the time of the Great War he enlisted into the King’s Royal Service Corps and saw overseas service. He was later transferred to the Labour Corps and Royal Fusiliers.
